Alia is a quiet and well-preserved town in the south-west Madonie, lying between wide, green hilly areas. The real attractions of this town lie 4 km away from the built-up area, on a rosy sandstone hill: the Grotte della Gurfa (Gurfa caves, 5000 b.C.), an inestimable and unique example of prehistoric architecture, whose two levels were hand-carved, and an outstanding tholos whose origin is still wrapped in mystery. An outstanding quantity of stone-carved tombs can be found along the sides of the Gurfa hill. Don’t miss the Etho-anthropological museum, bearing witness to the peasant world, the Arabian Cubaand the sulphur mines.

Alia is 67 km. distant from Agrigento, 68 km. from Caltanissetta, 180 km. from Catania, 83 km. from Enna, 244 km. from Messina, 74 km. from Palermo, which province it belongs to, 208 km. from Ragusa, 284 km. from Siracusa, 173 km. from Trapani.
